Both artists made sure that their imprisoned boss, real name Dwayne Carter, remember when they accepted their prizes, with Minaj dedicates her award to the prison-like star Wayne Drake called "my hero and my mentor."
John Legend was honored with a special award for his philanthropy, while Keys, Janelle Monae, Patti LaBelle and Esmeralda Spalding all took part in a musical tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award winner Prince.
The audience in Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium welcomed the soul icon to the stage with a standing ovation and Prince thanked his fans for their support long-term when he called the promising new talent in the music industry.
He said: "I believe the future is in good hands. I have so much talent here tonight .. and I'm just so glad to be a part of this world of music.
"I was pretty wildly in my younger days and you do not have to do what I did, you do not hoeft to any of the mistakes I've made. The future is now in your hands, the world is truly yours."
It was a night of collaborations with PDO working with Keyshia Cole and Eminem for "Aircraft," and Diddy, Dirty Money is assisted by Rick Ross, TI and Nicki Minaj on the "Hello, Good Morning" remix, while on the podium again for the show got Minaj Ludacris' finals with rocker Tommy Lee on drums before his single "My Bad Chick. "
Ludacris closed the show as part of DJ Khaled's all-star lineup for 'All I Do is to win, "the will of T-Pain, Busta Rhymes and Sean" Diddy "Combs to help the night to end .
Other highlights of the 10th annual BET Awards performances by Usher, El DeBarge and Alicia Keys, who sang a medley of her hits including 'No One', 'Try Sleeping recorded with a broken heart' and 'Unthinkable (I'm Ready). "
Late star Lena Horne, Teddy Pendergrass, and former actor Gary Coleman were also remembered at the annual awards show, which was hosted by Queen Latifah.
Presenters included Jada Pinkett Smith, Taraji P. Henson, Nia Long, Ciara and Mike Epps.

Soulful El DeBarge, Smoother Than Ever, Debuts Music From New Album Second Chance On 'BET Awards' Show

"I want the world to know that everyone deserves a second chance," said DeBarge. His long-awaited fifth solo album, Second Chance tells his story of redemption that a period of personal turmoil for the immensely talented singer and songwriter followed. Earlier tender and smooth falsetto love songs resulted in 16 Top 10s, both with his family group DeBarge, one of the most popular young American Pop R & B acts of the '80s, and as a solo performer. But El continued to be heard, even when leaving the scene following the 1994 Heart mind and soul, a collaboration with Babyface. Everyone from the infamous B.I.G. Ashanti and Mariah Carey and Patti LaBelle to have covered or sampled hits with him as singer, many of which he also wrote and produced. Now the original is back - renewed, rededicated, and ready to take his place again under the real stars of R & B.
